What is Carbon Removal?
Carbon removal—often referred to as Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR)—goes beyond simply cutting emissions. It is about actively reversing part of the damage already done to the climate system.
At its core, carbon removal is the process of taking CO₂ out of the atmosphere and storing it in a way that keeps it out of circulation for decades to thousands of years. This storage can happen in natural systems like forests and soils, or through engineered solutions such as underground geological storage or mineralization.
If reducing emissions is like turning off the tap, carbon removal is draining the flooded tub. But in reality, the situation is even more complex:
- The “tap” (global emissions) is still partially on
- The “bathtub” (the atmosphere) is already overflowing
- And the “floor” (ecosystems and communities) is being damaged by the spillover
That’s why carbon removal plays a distinct and complementary role in climate action.

Why is it So Important?
Over time, human activities have pumped massive amounts of CO₂ into the air, trapping heat and driving global warming. Even if the entire world drastically cut emissions tomorrow, two problems remain:
- Historical CO₂ will continue to heat the planet for decades.
- The products we rely on daily (from shipping to agriculture) are incredibly difficult to fully decarbonize right now.
Furthermore, climate science is clear: even if we decarbonise everything, we still need to remove billions of tons of carbon to achieve net zero by 2050. So, to limit global temperature rise, we must do two things simultaneously: reduce future emissions and remove existing carbon. Without both, solving the climate crisis will be extremely difficult.
How Does it Work?
At a high level, carbon removal involves two steps: capturing carbon dioxide from the air, and storing it in a way that prevents it from returning to the atmosphere. At C:Real, these approaches are grouped into two simple categories:
- Biosphere Solutions (Nature-Based): Leveraging natural processes, like forests and oceans, to absorb CO₂.
- Engineered Solutions (Tech-Based): Using advanced technology to pull carbon directly from the sky.

Enter C:Real: How You Can Use Carbon Removal Today
We believe you shouldn't need a corporate budget to make a difference. C:Real is built around a simple idea: Make high-quality carbon removal part of everyday life.
Instead of asking you to make major lifestyle overhauls, carbon removal is now being integrated into the things you already do. Here is what that looks like in practice:
- At Checkout: Look for the C:Real option when buying your morning coffee, enjoying your latenight drink, booking a ticket, or shopping groceries. You can add a few cents to seamlessly remove the exact carbon footprint of that specific purchase.
- Micro-Subscriptions: You can conveniently subscribe to remove a specific amount of carbon (like a few kilograms a week) to match your lifestyle, without any hassle.
Start Small. Make It Real.
You don’t need to be perfect to be an environmentalist. You don’t need to do everything. But you can easily be part of the solution.
By tying micro-contributions to your daily habits, carbon removal becomes effortless. Real change doesn’t just come from a few massive corporate pledges—it comes from millions of small, verified consumer actions moving in the exact same direction.
- Carbon removal extracts CO₂ from the atmosphere and stores it long-term.
- It’s necessary because historical emissions and hard-to-decarbonize activities continue to warm the planet.
- Net zero by 2050 requires both emission reduction and carbon removal.
- Carbon removal involves capturing CO₂ and storing it permanently.
- C:Real enables individuals to participate via at-checkout contributions and micro-subscriptions.
- Millions of small, everyday actions collectively drive meaningful climate impact.
